About this work

This was part of my solo show Assemblage at the Tatham Art Gallery in Pietermaritzburg in 2011.

I bought this old doll as it is with the tape over its mouth, and chose to leave it there. The simple addition of the tape over the doll's mouth creates a hidden story or drama. It's as if someone has felt the need to silence the doll, even though it is an inanimate object. Despite its age, the doll retains its moulded infancy. Its pretty mouth adds to the illusion of youth, and perhaps it is this falsehood that the tape is meant to silence. The oldness of the toy is only revealed by its faded eyes.
